OVERVIEW

of our Approach

The Goldfinch School is a full-day, year-round preschool program open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:30pm. Our preschool program serves children ages two through five at our campus in the Bryant neighborhood of Seattle.

We build upon children’s natural sense of wonder and inventiveness to foster confidence and a love of learning.

Even in these early years, children are innately curious, competent, resourceful, and creative. We seize this excitement with our hands-on, inquiry, and play-based approach. It is children’s genuine enthusiasm about the world around them that drives our program. Our curriculum is rooted in the notion that experiential learning fuels children’s natural curiosities, builds critical thinking skills, and promotes a lifelong love of learning.

Young children thrive in environments where they feel comfortable and safe. The Goldfinch School’s small, homelike setting allows students to explore freely, spread their wings, and discover who they are and what it means to be a part of a larger community.

Beginning the Journey

The Goldfinch School’s program is a friendly, nurturing, and inviting community and was created to educate young children in a fun-loving and stimulating atmosphere of challenge, exploration, and respect. Our approach instills curiosity in students and provides them with a foundation for interdisciplinary learning that will serve them throughout their lives.

At The Goldfinch School, we know these things to be true:

  • Children need to play

  • Children enjoy challenges

  • Children respond positively to genuine respect

  • When children, teachers, and parents work together cooperatively, marvelous things can happen

Introduction to Our Program

Everything we do at The Goldfinch School revolves around educating young children holistically. We have conscientiously created a thematic, interdisciplinary curriculum to nurture children and develop their creative and critical thinking skills. As passionate facilitators of each child’s growth, our highly skilled teachers design learning opportunities for students to become adept problem solvers and creative explorers.  Our curriculum is present primarily in center-based, developmentally appropriate learning experiences and activities structured around specific topics and themes. Particular skills in language, literacy, reading, and math readiness, as well as fine and large motor coordination, are expanded throughout the year.

Children’s growth is supported by staff who continuously talk and listen to them about what they are doing in each activity.  The emphasis of each activity is on learning rather than teaching.  We want children to feel that learning occurs because they want to master something.  In this sense, the materials and equipment in the rooms, which change frequently, and the teachers themselves, are all resources for the children to use in ways appropriate to their needs.  Children sense the spirit of genuine caring and loving commitment the entire staff has for every child.
